DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z May 3, 2008

Utah/Arizona/Colorado/New Mexico/Texas/Oklahoma:
The large area of aerosol that moved inland last night continues to
push eastward. This aerosol is believed to be smoke from the massive
Russian fires of about a week ago. This area covers extends from the
Four Corners across southern CO/northern NM through the panhandle of TX
into southern OK.

Manitoba/Saskatchewan:
The numerous agricultural fires were seen last night across the southern
half of these provinces has produced smoke that is seen early this
morning.  The smoke stretches out of Canada through most of ND and into
western MN.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
