DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z May 4, 2008


Northern and Central Plains::
Smoke from fires in Manitoba and Saskatchewan Provinces of south
central Canada as well as North Dakota can be seem early this morning
stretching from NE southeast into AR and western TN and northwest MS.
Some of this smoke may still be remnant smoke from the large Russian
fires of a approximately a week ago.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
