DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z May 10, 2008

Mississippi:
A heavy smoke plume was observed moving towards the northeast into the
central part of the state. Moderately dense smoke and light smoke extends
even further, some 100 miles from the source of origin. Another smoke
plume, moderately dense in nature, was spotted in Scott County moving
towards the northeast as well. Light smoke from that plume extends much
further, reaching into eastern Alabama.

Florida:
A light smoke plume in Brevard County was spotted moving towards the
east out and over the Atlantic Ocean.

Oregon:
Several moderately dense smoke plumes sprang up during the late afternoon
and evening hours on vis imagery and continue to produce smoke. Most of
these plumes, which can be found in Deschutes, Jefferson, Coos, and
Curry Counties, are drifting towards the east.

Light smoke from the Bay of Campeche and the Gulf of Mexico has drifted
up into south and eastern Texas this evening, and also into Louisiana.
This smoke is presumed to be from oil wells in the Bay of Campeche.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
