DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0225Z May 11, 2008

Western Gulf:
Large area of light smoke from fires in Central America moved north
through the western Gulf of Mexico into portions of Texas, much of
Louisiana and southwest Mississippi.

Arizona:
A light smoke plume extended 35 km east southeast of the Solano fire in
Pima County.

Colorado:
A fire that developed this afternoon in El Paso County produced a sizable
cloud of light smoke that reached the New Mexico border.

Florida:
A narrow plume of light smoke extended 200 km to the east of fires in
Glades County.

California:
A fire in Mono County produced a smoke plume that reached the Nevada
border.

Manitoba/Saskatchewan:
Ag fires in Saskatchewan and southwest Manitoba resulted in largely
light to moderate smoke plumes that generally moved to the southeast.
Some smoke entered the northern tier of counties in North Dakota and
Minnesota.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
