DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z May 17, 2008

South Florida:
The Mustang Corner fire in western Miami-Dade county produced smoke
overnight that has remained fairly consolidated as it is now moving NE
across N Miami-Dade and E Broward counties as it moves over the northern
portions of the straits of Florida toward W Grand Bahama.
There may be some other light haze/smoke from other fires across south
and central FL just off the coast of Indian River, St. Lucie and Martin
counties and appears to be moving more ESE toward the other area.
Light smoke can be seen moving E across Lake Okeechobee from the Myakka
Cut fire.

E Alberta/SW Saskatchewan/NE Montana/NW South Dakota:
Thin to moderate smoke can be seen in a broken line from a fire(s) near
54.4N 113W in or just NE of Edmonton that extends to the Badlands of W SD.
It is about 60km wide on average.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
