DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z May 29, 2008

Ontario/Great Lakes:
A large area of haze is moving through Ontario south into the Great Lakes
region and northern Michigan. This haze may be due to smoke from large
fires in Russia.

Northern Mexico/Southcentral United States:
In the first visible images of the day an area of haze can be seen over
Northern Mexico, eastern New Mexico/Colorado and northwestern Texas.
This may be from the previous nights fires in Mexico.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
