DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0315Z May 30, 2008

Florida and adjacent areas of the Gulf of Mexico:
Several fires in southern Florida are producing smoke plumes that extend
southwestward. There are particularly large fire areas west of Lake
Okeechobee and in Collier County and their plumes extend over the Gulf
of Mexico and consist of light to moderate with some dense smoke.

Northern Mexico/Southcentral United States:
An area of haze possibly mixed with light residual smoke from Mexican
agricultural burns covers part of northern Mexico and the southcentral
U.S. with the haze/smoke particularly prominent over western Texas.

New Mexico:
A puff of smoke from a fire in Catron County produced an area of mostly
light smoke that moved northeastward reaching about the center of the
state. It is difficult to see whether the fire is still producing smoke.

California:
A plume of light smoke extends westward over the Pacific from a fire
in southwestern Monterey County. A fire near the border of San Diego
and Orange Counties is producing a small, mostly light smoke plume that
extends southwestward.

Ontario:
An area of probable light residual smoke aloft from Russian fires has
moved southeastward through Ontario today and currently seems to be
approaching Lake Ontario.

Manitoba
Two large and bright fire areas in Manitoba are producing large plumes
of primarily moderate to dense smoke that extend northward. The fires
are at about 53.6N 99.4W and 55.0N 101.0W.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
