DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z MAY 31, 2008

Mid Mississippi Valley:
A patch of moderately dense haze over southern Missouri, northern
Arkansas, southern Illinois and western portions of both Kentucky and
Tennessee was of unknown origin and composition.

Central Canada/Upper Midwest:
A region of light to possibly moderately dense haze stretched from
southern Saskatchewan into extreme northeast North Dakota, much
of Minnesota and into southern Wisconsin and northern Illinois.
While possibly containing some smoke from fires across Saskatchewan,
the precise composition and origin of this haze is unknown.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
