DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z JUNE 1, 2008

Southcentral Canada and northcentral U.S.
A faint area of haze possibly mixed with smoke (or with smoke aloft) is
seen especially over southern Saskatchewan and North Dakota. The area
is moving eastsoutheastward. Any smoke is presumably a residual of
previous days fires in western Canada, or even earlier fires in Eurasia.

Systems problems are limiting our access to satellite imagery today
so areas of smoke/dust that would have normally been seen might have
been missed.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
