DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z JUNE 5, 2008

North Carolina:
The large fire which appeared last night across the Hyde and Washington
county line is still burning and producing light to moderately dense
smoke which extends east into the Atlantic.

Texas:
An area of haze can be seen in the panhandle of Texas which is traveling
NE extending through the panhandle of Oklahoma and into Kansas. This may
be from the previous nights fires or blowing dust.

Southwest:
Areas of blowing dust were seen over portions of southern Nevada, New
Mexico and the Baja.

Canada:
A light haze over middle Alberta, Saskatchewan and Manitoba is seen in
the first few visible images of the day. A moderately dense plume can
be seen close to Lake Winnipeg which may be remnants of the large fire
located between Lake Winnipeg and Cedar Lake last night.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
