DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z JUNE 9, 2008

North Carolina:
A large wildfire in Tyrrell and Washington Counties is continuing to
produce heavy, dense smoke blowing in an east-southeast direction over
the Outer Banks and Atlantic Ocean. A narrow but thick plume extends
about 275 miles eastward into the Atlantic Ocean. Light to moderate
smoke continues to cover much of the offshore area east of the Carolinas
north to New York, and south to Florida, where some of this light smoke
extends westward across much of southern Georgia and northern Florida.

S. Tennessee/W. North Carolina/W. South Carolina/Georgia:
In evening vis imagery, light smoke/haze is drifting to the north.

California:
In Tulare County, a heavy smoke plume is currently moving to the
south-southeast. The heavy smoke extends at least 50 miles to the
southeast. In Monterey County, a moderate smoke plume is moving to
the west over the Pacific Ocean and extends out 35 miles from the source.

Canada:
Several moderately dense smoke plumes are moving to the west and northwest
over the central and northern parts of the province of Saskatchewan.
One plume in particular, about 200 miles southwest of Reindeer Lake,
is very dense and extends out at least 60 miles from the source of origin.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
