DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z JUNE 9, 2008

North Carolina:
A large wildfire in Tyrrell and Washington Counties is continuing to
produce heavy, dense smoke blowing in an east-southeast direction over
the Outer Banks and Atlantic Ocean. A moderate to thick plume fans out
into the Atlantic by as much as 600 mile before being obscured by weather
clouds. However, remnant smoke still hovers along and off the coast of
the Carolinas with maybe just a little bit extending into coastal Georgia.

Mississippi Valley and the Southeast:
Some fires this morning in eastern Arkansas, northwestern Mississippi
and northeastern Louisiana are not yet producing any noticeable smoke.

California:
Smoke from a fire in eastern Tulare County extends eastward into Inyo
and San Bernardino counties.

Canada:
Weather clouds have moved out of the region in northern Saskatchewan
and reveals a plume extending about 100 miles to the northwest from a
location about 200 miles southwest of Reindeer Lake.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
