DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0145Z JUNE 10, 2008

North Carolina:
Heavy smoke from the Evans Road fire extended 200 km to the southeast,
but a large residual area of light smoke covered portions of GA, SC,
NC, TN, KY, WV and VA. Residual smoke also stretched some 900 km over
the Atlantic.

Alabama:
A fire in Bibb County generated a moderate smoke plume that extended
175 km to the north.

Colorado:
Light smoke extended 120 km to the east of a fire in La Plata County.

Arizona:
A fire in northern Gila County produced a light plume of smoke that
extended 50 km to the east.

California:
Although moderately dense smoke only extended 60 km to the west of a
blaze in Tulare County, residual smoke from this fire extended across
extreme southern NV into northern Arizona. The Indians fire in Monterey
County was more significant, generating a moderately dense plume that
extended 115 km to the southwest over the Pacific. Dust was observed
in satellite imagery south of these fires, moving towards the east.

Saskatchewan:
Moderate to heavy smoke plumes from the fires in the northern third of
the province were moving towards the northwest and not impacting the US.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
