DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z JUNE 11, 2008

North Carolina:
In Tyrrell and Washington Counties, moderate to heavy dense smoke is
moving off to the east with the heaviest smoke moving over Dare and
Hyde Counties. Smoke becomes lighter as it moves offshore, but also
expands north; as far north as Cape Cod, Massachusetts, and some 600
miles to the east of the source over the Atlantic Ocean.

Colorado:
In Las Animas County, a moderately dense smoke plume is currently moving
to the south-southwest and extends out some 50 miles from the source.

California:
In Monterey County, a heavy smoke plume is currently moving to the south
over the Pacific Ocean. However, some lighter smoke is making its way
into extreme northern San Luis Obispo County.

Saskatchewan, Canada:
Several fires are producing light to moderately dense smoke over the
northern province. Most of these plumes are moving off to the north.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
