DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z JUNE 12, 2008

North Carolina:
A 325 km wide moderate to heavy smoke plume from the Evans Road fire
with some contribution from the South 1 fire extended due east for 1036
km to approximately 69W.

Kansas:
A moderate to heavy smoke plume extended northeast 177 km from a fire
in Seward County.

Texas:
Light with isolated moderate smoke from fires in northern Blanco and
Reagan counties extended up to 140 km to the north.

Colorado:
In Las Animas County, a light to moderate plume of smoke fanned out and
extended to the Kansas and Oklahoma borders, a distance of 185 km.

California:
Heavy smoke from the Indians fire extended 450 km to the south southeast,
but lighter smoke extended 725 km.  A new fire near Santa Cruz resulted
in a moderate to heavy smoke plume extending 63 km south southwest.
The Clover fire along the Inyo and Tulare county line produced light
smoke 58 km into the Mojave Desert.  A moderate to heavy smoke plume
extended 68 km to the southwest of a blaze in central Butte County.

Saskatchewan, Canada:
Several fires in the northern third of the province were producing
moderate to heavy smoke moving north and northeast without effecting
the US.

  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
