DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1555Z JUNE 14, 2008

North Carolina/US East Coast:
Moderately dense to dense smoke from the Evans Road fire extends toward
the northeast over 120 km. Smoke from the South 1 fire is moderately
dense to dense and moving east-northeast into eastern Virginia.
Dispersed smoke from theses fires covers much of eastern seaboard and can
be seen as far north as Connecticut with a hint of very light smoke in
Massachusetts and as far south as Grand Bahama Island but this southern
area of smoke is staying well offshore of Florida.

California:
The Indians Fire in Monterey County continues to produce dense smoke which
extends to the north passing through Plumas and Sierra counties continuing
into Washoe county Nevada. Light smoke from the Indians and Whiskey
fires is merging and traveling north reaching the California/Oregon
border passing into Klamath county Oregon.

Central Great Basin/Southwest/Central Plains:
The first few visible images of the day show a thin haze in the above
listed regions which may be remnant smoke from the fires in CA/NV last
evening/overnight.

Canada:
A thin ribbon of unknown composition can be seen passing through
Saskatchewan, dipping down into North Dakota, Minnesota and Wisconsin
before turning back north into Ontario. This may be smoke from the
fires that have been burning in northern Saskatchewan the last few days.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
