THROUGH 0202Z JUNE 16, 2008

North Carolina/US East Coast:
Moderately dense to dense smoke from the South 1 fire can be seen
traveling to the southeast and merging with the cloud line off the
coast. There have been signs of the Evans Road fire continuing to burn
throughout the day but the smoke from it was not seen because of clouds
over the area.

Southeast US: An area of haze, which is likely remnants of the South
1 and Evans Road fires which traveled to the south earlier in the week,
can be seen over the eastern portion of Florida and off the coast.

Central US:
A large area of of remnant smoke from the Indians and Whiskey fires can
be seen extending across much of Nebraska, northern Kansas and entering
into eastern Iowa and Missouri.

Colorado:
The Bridger fire in Las Animas county continues to emanate smoke which
is light to moderately dense in composition. The smoke reaches southern
Bent county to the west and the western border of Las Animas and Costilla
counties.

New Mexico:
The Dripping Springs fire in southern Dona Ana county is generating
light to moderately dense smoke which is traveling to the southeast
through Otero county and is approaching El Paso county, Texas.

Utah:
Dense smoke from a fire in central Garfield county extends over 300km
to the east reaching San Juan county Colorado and is over 100km in width
at its widest point.

In north central Rye county, near the Monitor Range, the Elkhorn 2 fire
is producing moderately dense to dense smoke which is traveling to the
northeast extending into southern White Pine and Eureka counties.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
