DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z JUNE 17, 2008

Southeast US:
Light to moderate smoke from the South 1 and Evans Road fires of E NC
and ext. SE VA continues to linger along the SE coastal states from
Jacksonville, FL to Norfolk, VA. The width of the smoke area as well as
the density of the smoke decrease the further southwest one goes along
the coastline. The most dense areas continue to be near the fires and
downwind over the Outer Banks.

California:
The Indians fire in Monterey county continues to burn as a bright hotspot
is still seen even early this morning...but smoke is moderate to dense
in the surrounding valleys but only thin elsewhere from the fire SW to
the coastline.

Canada/Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley:
Large fires across N Saskatchewan continue to produce smoke though it is
difficult to see near the fires themselves, as there are low clouds in the
vicinity. However, remnant thin to moderate smoke could be seen shearing
out NNW to SSE... covering nearly all of Manitoba, moving SE covering
all of MN, a N-S central swath of WI and ending across S Lk Michigan
near Benton Harbor. The northerly moving smoke covers portions of SE
NW Territories, S mainland Nunavut, and portions of western Hudson Bay.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
