DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z JUNE 19, 2008

North Carolina:
The Evans Road and South 1 fires continue to emit moderately dense to
dense smoke which is traveling to the east and south. The smoke extends
over 400km to the northeast staying off of the coast. To the south an
area of haze can be seen off the coast of South Carolina which is most
likely remnants of emissions from the fires on previous days.

California:
The Indians fire is producing smoke which is traveling offshore to
the south. The area of smoke extends over 300km before it becomes
indecipherable and is nearly 100km wide.

Canada:
In the first few visible images of the day an area of haze is seen
extending across the border of northern Manitoba and Ontario provinces.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
