DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z JUNE 20, 2008

North Carolina/South Carolina:
The Evans Road and South 1 fires continue to emit moderately dense to
dense smoke. Both plumes are generally moving off to the east and over the
Atlantic Ocean. As the smoke moves offshore, it starts to move to the
south and expand as well. The smoke can be seen off the South Carolina
coast. An area of haze can be seen as far north as Massachusetts ,
which is most likely due to remnants of emissions from these fires on
previous days.

California:
The Clover fire is producing moderately dense smoke which is moving to
the south as the plume fans out over Tulare county where it is located
and also extends into Inyo and Kern Counties.

Utah:
An area of haze which is mostly from yesterdays large fire in Nevada
can be seen moving to the east across central Utah.

Canada:
Large fires in northern Saskatchewan are producing light to moderately
dense smoke which is spreading out and moving to the southeast.
In the first few images of the day an area of haze of unknown origin
and composition can be seen over most of Ontario.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
