DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z JUNE 22, 2008

Virginia, North Carolina, and nearby ocean:
Fires in eastern North Carolina and near the Virginia-North Carolina
border are producing moderate smoke that extends east northeastward over
the Atlantic. In some cases smoke can be detected more than 125 miles
from shore.

Central US:
An area of haze can be seen covering the central US extending out of
Manitoba, into North Dakota down through Kansas, Oklahoma, New Mexico
before dissipating in Texas.

California:
Several fires in central California including the Indians, Wild and
Trading Fires, are producing light to moderate smoke which is extending
primarily southeastward reaching Fresno county.  There are several smaller
fires in Butte county which are producing light smoke which is traveling
to the northeast.  In northern California in the area of Del Norte and
Siskiyou counties several fires are producing moderatelty dense to dense
smoke which is traveling to the southwest entering Humboldt county.

Alaska:
Remnants of the fire located in the Yukon-Koyukuk can be seen dissipating
in the first few visible images of the day.

Canada:
Remnants of smoke from last nights fires located in northern Saskatchewan
and new smoke from some which have continued to burn can be seen in
north of Lake Winnipeg in Manitoba.

  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
