DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z JUNE 26, 2008

California/Western US:
Several large wildfires and numerous smaller wildfires in the north
central part of California continue to emit a large mass of smoke which
covers much of California, northern Nevada, southern Idaho, northern Utah,
and western Wyoming. Much of the smoke is moderately dense to dense,
which covers much of northern and central California, and is drifting
to the south and east. The moderately dense to dense smoke also extends
northeastward over southeastern Oregon, northern and western Nevada,
southern Idaho, southwestern Montana, and western Wyoming. Over coastal
west central California, the Indian fire in Monterrey County continues to
produce moderately dense smoke and extends to the south, where lighter
smoke from yesterday is still present, specifically in San Luis Obispo
County. Lighter smoke is also found to the east in the Mojave Desert.

New Mexico/Southern Plains:
In Chaves County, in southeast Arizona, a moderatetly dense to dense
smoke plume is moving to the north. Lighter smoke from this plume is
making its way up to the border of New Mexico and Colorado, and also
into the panhandle of Texas. In addition, more light smoke is extending
east into southern Kansas and through much of the state of Oklahoma.

North Carolina/Virginia:
Leftover light smoke from the Evans Road and South 1 fires can be found
offshore and the smoke extends to the east 500km over the Atlantic.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
