DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z JUNE 27, 2008

California/Western US and Central Plains:
Several large wildfires and numerous smaller wildfires in the north
central part of California continue to emit a large mass of moderately
dense to dense smoke which covers much of California, north of 35N, and
extends to the west over the Pacific Ocean. Light smoke from yesterday's
fires in California has spread east overnight and is now situated over
north-central Nevada, northern Utah, southern Wyoming, northern Colorado,
and western Nebraska.

North Carolina/Virginia:
Leftover light smoke/haze from the Evans Road and South 1 fires is visible
offshore over the Atlantic, extending east at least 700km between 34N
and 39N. The South 1 fire continues to emit moderately dense to locally
dense smoke which is currently moving to the northeast over southeast
Virginia and out over the Atlantic.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
