DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1630Z JUNE 28, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia:

A narrow thick plume of smoke can be seen extending northeast from
the fire in the Dismal Swamp along the NC/VA border to Virgina Beach
and dissipating as it continues into the offshore waters off the
Delmarva. Light smoke can also be seen moving over the Outer Banks and
out to sea from fires in around the northeastern sounds region of NC.

Montana:

Along the extreme eastern portion of Montana smoke is seen being pulled
down from fires in northern Saskatchewan.

California/Oregon:

Several large wildfires and numerous smaller wildfires in northern
California continue to emit large amounts of moderately dense to dense
smoke which fills the entire San Joaquin valley and coastal areas from
near Big Sur up the coast and over the southwestern corner of Oregon
and coastal waters.

Canada:

In northern Saskatchewan south of Lake Athabasca several fires are
generating light smoke which is moving south to the Lac Ronge region. Some
old smoke can be seen west of Great Bear Lake and extending northwest
to the shore of the Beaufort Sea.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
