DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1515Z JULY 2, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia:
Light to moderately dense smoke can be seen emanating from the South
1 and Evans Rd fires. The smoke plume from the South 1 fire appears to
be moving towards the southeast, whereas the Evans Rd. smoke plume is
moving east. In addition, both plumes extend out between 50-75km.

Upper Midwest:
Light to moderately dense smoke from the Saskatchewan fires has moved
down into North and South Dakota, Minnesota, and Wisconsin. Lighter
smoke from these fires continue to move in a southerly direction.

California:
Numerous wildfires throughout the state, especially in north-central
California, and in Kern County, in south-central California, are producing
moderately dense to dense smoke plumes. Smoke from the northern California
fires are generally moving towards the southwest, whereas risidual smoke
from yesterday's fires in central and southern California are moving
off to the northeast.

Canada:
Several fires in east-central Saskatchewan are producing moderaly dense to
dense smoke plumes. These plumes are moving south and extend out 200km
from their sources of origin. Furthermore, light to moderately dense
smoke from yesterday's fires have moved into southern Saskatchewan. Also,
some risidual light smoke/haze from the California fires over the past
week is now sitauted in northern British Columbia and northern Alberta.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
