DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JULY 3, 2008

North Carolina/Virginia:
Moderate to isolated heavy smoke was moving east and northeast from the
South 1 and Evans Rd fires.

Mid Atlantic and New England:
Residual light smoke from fires in Canada and California stretched from
the Mid Atlantic through New England into southeast Canada.

Great Lakes/Midwest/Plains:
A ribbon of moderate smoke from fires in Saskatchewan, discernible at low
sun angles, extended from the Great Lakes southwest across the Midwest
and then northwest into the Plains.

Western US:
Heavy smoke was generally moving north and northeast from fires in
California with the exceptions of a blaze near the coast in Santa Barbara
County where heavy smoke was moving south and the Basin Complex and
Indians fires which resulted in heavy smoke moving south. An extensive
area of light smoke extended from southern California northward into
British Columbia although it was obscured by cloud in northern Oregon
and Washington.

Arizona:
The Lane 2 fire generated moderate with isolated heavy smoke which moved
towards the southwest.

Canada:
Smoke from fires in Saskatchewan produced moderate with isolated dense
smoke that moved towards the east and was not expected to imminently
impact the US.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
