DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1445Z JULY 9, 2008

New England:
Residue haze and smoke covers coastal New England.

Upper Midwest and western Great Lakes:
Light residue smoke and haze covers portion of the Dakotas, Minnesota,
and Wisconsin.

California:
Moderate and light smoke has spilled eastward into western Nevada from
the ongoing fires in northern California.  A large amount of moderately
dense smoke covers all of the vallies and coastal regions of northern
and central California.  This smoke area extends nearly 400 nautical
miles off the coast.

Canada:
Smoke from fires in northern Saskatchewan Province covers an area to
east of Great Slave Lake in the Northwest Territories.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
