DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z JULY 10, 2008

California:
Numerous large wildfires burning across northern California and Napa
Valley, in the counties of Trinity, Tehama, Siskiyou, Shasta, Butte,
and Placer, are emitting a large mass of dense smoke extending to the
east. The moderately dense to dense smoke is currently moving through
northern California, southeastern Oregon, most of Nevada, and northern
Utah. Moderately dense smoke from last night's fires has now moved
into the central coast region of California, and furthermore, most of
California is under at least light smoke. In addition, the wildfire in
Siskiyou County in the northern part of the state is currently producing
dense smoke, moving south along the northern coast of California into
Del Norte and Humboldt Counties.

Central Canada:
In extreme northern Saskatchewan, eastern Manitoba, and the southern
portion of the Northwest Territories, light smoke/haze is drifting to
the north and east. The smoke and haze is presumably from yesterday's
fires in northern Saskatchewan.

Upper Midwest:
Light smoke/haze covers portions of the Dakotas, Minnesota, Nebraska,
Iowa, northern Missouri, and Illinois.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
