DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1400Z JULY 11, 2008

California:
Dense smoke from the numerous fires burning in northern California can be
seen extending from 50km off shore through the central US.  The smoke
covers California, Nevada, southern Idaho, Utah, northern Wyoming,
northern Colorado, North Dakota, South Dakota, Nebraska, northern Kansas
and light smoke can be seen in Minnesota and Iowa before it is obscured
by clouds.

Washington:
A fire close to the border of Douglas and Chelan counties is generating
light to moderately dense smoke which is moving to the east.

Northern Saskatchewan/Northwest Territories:
Residual light smoke from fires north of Lake Athabasca and the Great
Slave Lake can bee seen in central Saskatchewan and central Northwest
Territories.  Residual smoke from the fires located in Alaska can be
seen in the central Yukon.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
