DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1545Z JULY 13, 2008

Central Canada/Upper Mississippi Valley:
An area of remnant smoke stretches from northwestern Hudson Bay, through
Manitoba, the Dakotas, Minnesota, Wisconsin, and Iowa.

California/Great Basin/Southwest:
Moderately dense to dense smoke continues to cover much of the northern
two thirds of California. The area of the most dense smoke covers
northwest California and the border of California and Oregon and becomes
lighter as it moves east into northern Nevada. Locally dense smoke is
emerging from the fires in Monterey county and is moving towards the
coast. A broad area of smoke also extends off the entire California
coast but is difficult to discern due to the prosence of extensive low
level clouds.

Washington/Idaho:
Remnant smoke from a fire along the Chelan/Douglas county border in
Washington is moving across the northern half of Idaho.

Alberta/Saskatchewan:
An area of light smoke can be seen between the clouds moving from northern
Alberta into Saskatchewan.

Southern Plains:
Light smoke from the California fires can be seen moving east across
the southern plains along the Kansas/Oklahoma border and into southern
Missouri.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
