DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z JULY 14, 2008

Pacific Northwest/Northern Plains:
The large fire near Mount Adams is currently producing a 15 km wide
plume that stretches 375 km into Oregon's Grant and Baker county.
A disconnected area of dense smoke is over southwestern Montana moving
to the east.

California:
Dense smoke can be seen hanging in the valleys of northern California. The
fires in Monterey county are producing locally dense smoke moving
northeast toward the ocean.

California/Great Basin/Southwest:
Moderately dense to light smoke blankets much of northern California,
northern Nevada and Utah, along with southern Oregon and Idaho.

South-Central Rockies/South-Central Plains/Mississippi Valley:
Mainly light smoke from the California fires extend across portions of
southern Wyoming and then dips to the south across Colorado, Nebraska,
Iowa, Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Texas.

Mid-Atlantic/Northeast:
An area of then residual smoke and haze can be seen just off the coast
most likely from the fires in California.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
