DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1430Z JULY 15, 2008

Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley:
An area of smoke that was in the upper Missouri Valley yesterday is
now covering eastern South Dakota, the southern half of Minnesota and
central Wisconsin.  Some residue smoke appears to be over parts of lower
Michigan and northern Ohio.

California:
The fires in northern California continue to emit dense smoke which is
presently covering northern California and much of western Oregon.

Montana/North Dakota/South Dakota:
A small area of light smoke appears in northeastern Montana and along
the Wyoming/Montana border.

Canada:
Some light smoke can be seen amongst the weather clouds in central
Alberta and  Saskatchewan.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
