DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0230Z JULY 16, 2008

California/western US:
The wildfires burning in northern California and in Monterrey County
(Big Sur) are producing a large area of very dense smoke that stretches
north and east into northern California, northwest Nevada, and most of
Oregon. Moderately dense smoke stretches across southeast Washington
State (combing with smoke from the fire in Yakima county) and moving
into Idaho and western Montana where is becomes lighter. Some light to
moderately dense smoke stretches across central and eastern California
and northern Nevada. The wildfire in Monterrey county is emitting very
dense smoke north/east/south from the source of the fire and is reaching
the central portion of the state and beginning to run into the light to
moderately dense smoke located there from the northern California fires.

Washington:
A wildfire in southwest Yakima county in the Mt. Adams Wilderness
Region is spreading moderately dense to dense smoke east across central
and eastern Washington and combines with the smoke moving north from
California wildfires.

Northern Plains/Upper and Middle Mississippi Valley/Upper Great Lakes/Ohio
Valley:
Light to moderately dense smoke from the California and Washington state
fires stretches from Montana eastward to western Michigan and Indiana and
southward into Iowa and central Illinois. An area of moderately dense
smoke stretches across central/eastern South Dakota, northern/central
Minnesota, northern Iowa, most of Wisconsin and into western Michigan.

Southeast/Mid Atlantic US:
Residual smoke most likely from the California and Washington State fires
is stretching across the Mid Atlantic/Southeast states from southeast
Pennsylvania south to northern Florida and then west into central Alabama.

Arkansas/Mississippi:
A fire in central Pope county is emitting a light smoke plume northwest
into Newton, Johnson and Madison counties. In north central Clark
county a fire is producing a light to moderately dense smoke plume west
NW into Pike, Montgomery, Polk, Howard and Scott counties in Arkansas
and McCurtain and Le Flore counties in eastern Oklahoma. A fire on the
border of Lincoln and Drew counties is producing a light to moderately
dense plume of smoke west into Calhoun, Cleveland, Bradely, Dallas,
Union and Quachita counties. In Lonoke county a fire is emitting a
light plume of smoke west into Pulaski.
In Kemper county Mississippi a fire is emitting a light plume of smoke
south into Newton, Lauderdale, Jones and Jasper counties.

Kansas:
Numerous agricultural/prescribe burns in central Kansas are producing a
slow moving area of smoke that stretches northward into southern Nebraska.

Colorado:
A fire in central Rio Blanco county is emitting a light plume of smoke
south into Garfield county.

Northwest Territories:
A wildfire burning on the north side of Great Slave Lake is producing
a moderately dense to dense plume of smoke south SE across the Lake.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
