DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z JULY 17, 2008

California:
The fires in northern California continue to produce dense smoke
which is moving to the north and then east. Northern California and
the southeastern portion of Oregon are covered in moderately dense to
dense smoke. Southern Idaho has moderately dense smoke which becomes
lighter as it extends through Wyoming and southern Nebraska into the
Dakotas where it is obscured by clouds.

Washington:
The fire located in Yakima county is emitting light to moderately dense
smoke which is moving to the southeast.

Canada:
The fires located south of Lake Athabasca and north of The Great Slave
Lake continue to generate moderately dense to dense smoke. The smoke is
moving southeast and extends from the north shore The Great Slave Lake,
over Lake Athabasca and on past Reindeer Lake almost reaching the shores
of the Hudson Bay.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
