DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JULY 18, 2008

Virginia:
Earlier in the day, two small fires one located in south King William
county and the other in Appomattox county were emitting light smoke
which traveled to the southwest each extending over 60km.

Southeastern US:
In Liberty county on the panhandle of Florida, Decatur county in
southwestern Georgia and Covington county in southern Alabama fires are
producing light to moderately dense smoke which is moving to the south
over the Gulf of Mexico.

Arkansas:
A fire in the northern portion of Nevada county is emitting light to
moderately dense smoke which is traveling to the north.

Mid and Southern California:
The Basin Complex in Monterey county continues to generate dense smoke
which is moving to the south and is in the northern portion of San Luis
Obispo county. At the border of California and Arizona in Imperial
county CA, several fires are emanating light smoke which is traveling
to the northeast into Lapaz county Arizona.

Northern California:
The fires in Northern CA continue to produce dense smoke. Today the smoke
was mainly moving to the east. Dense smoke covers the area surrounding
the fires near the Pacific coast with moderately dense smoke extending
over northeastern CA through northern Nevada, southeastern Oregon and
central Idaho. Light smoke from the northern CA fires can be seen
through Montana, Wyoming and the Dakotas.

Washington:
The fire near the Mt. Adams is emitting light to moderately dense smoke
which is fanning out through Skamania, Klickitat and Yakima counties.

Northern US:
There is a ribbon of SO2 from the Okmok volcano extending from the
Pacific coast of Washington, through northern Idaho, northern Montana,
southern Alberta and southern Saskatchewan.

Hawaii:
Smoke is coming from vent near the Puna coast on the south side of the Big
Island of Hawaii which may be to burning vegetation. The smoke extends
50km off shore to the west where is merges with the gases coming from
Halema`uma`u vent.

Northwest Territories/Manitoba:
On the northwestern shore of the Great Slave Lake a fire continues to
emit dense smoke which is moving to the northeast. Several other fires
north of the coast fire are generating moderately dense to dense smoke
which is also moving to the northeast where it joins with the smoke from
the coast fire. There are more smaller fires on the southeast coast
of the lake which are also producing moderately dense to dense smoke
which is moving northeast. Moderately dense to dense smoke from fires
burning between the Manitoba territory line and Lake Athabasca is quasi
stationary but the western fires have a drift to the the south while
the smoke from the more eastern fires is moving east. The smoke from
these fires extends close to Reindeer Lake.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
