DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z JULY 21, 2008

Impact of California Fires:
Moderate to heavy smoke extended from northern California, across southern
and western Oregon into southern and eastern Washington.  Large area of
light smoke stretched farther east covering portions of Idaho, Montana
and the Dakotas.

Idaho:
A moderate to dense plume of smoke extended 175 km to the northeast into
Montana from a blaze in Valley County.

Northwest Territories/Saskatchewan/Manitoba:
Smoke of various concentrations covered a large area of northern Alberta,
northern Saskatchewan, northern Manitoba and the central portion of the
Northwest Territories.




 


Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
