DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z JULY 24, 2008

Northern California fires:
Ongoing fires are producing moderately dense to dense smoke in the
upper San Joaquin Valley and drifting into southern Oregon. The smoke
is then being pulled and becoming less dense across northern Nevada
and southern Idaho then stretched into western and central Montana.

Canada:
Several large fires in northern Saskatchewan are producing thick smoke
from over Lake Athabasca east to Reindeer Lake and south to near Prince
Albert National Park. Thick smoke also extends north from these fires
to the region east of Great Slave Lake. Fires to the south and north of
Great Slave Lake are producing thick plumes of smoke that spread east
over the the southeastern portion of the Northwest Territory.

Alaska:
A fire on the western end of the Brooks Range is creating an area of
light smoke over the north slope region to point Barrow.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
