DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z AUGUST 01, 2008


Extent of smoke from northern California and Canadian fires:
Moderately dense smoke from the northern California fires extents through
Oregon, Idaho, Montana reaching Canada and affecting the southern portions
of the Alberta and Saskatchewan provinces.  There is another portion of
moderately dense smoke which is located in western Montana and Wyoming,
through South Dakota and into Iowa.  This area may be a combination
of smoke from the California fires and the fires in northern Wyoming
and southern Montana. Light smoke from the California fires mixed with
smoke from the Wyoming/Montana fires can be seen making its way across
the United States reaching the Atlantic.  The states effected by the
light smoke include WY, ND, SD, NE, KS, OK, TX, NM, IA, MN, WI, AR, MO,
IN, IL, OH, KY, TN, PA, MD, DE, VA, NJ.  Light smoke from the Canadian
fires can be seen moving north in the Northwest Territories.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
