DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z AUGUST 02, 2008

Central US:
There is a large area of haze across the central US that is likely
remnant smoke from the fires in northern California and the fires in
southern Montana and northern Wyoming.  The area of haze extends from
Montana and Wyoming through the Dakotas, Minnesota, Iowa, Nebraska,
Kansas, Oklahoma, Missouri and Arkansas.

California:
The fires in northern California are emitting moderately dense to
dense smoke which is traveling to the northeast through Oregon and into
central Idaho.

Wyoming:
The New Fork fire in Sublette County is still emanating moderately dense
smoke which is moving to the northeast.

Canada:
Remnant smoke from the fires by Lake Athabasca and the Great Slave Lake
can be seen moving poleward through the Northwest Territories.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
