DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z AUGUST 03, 2008

Central US:
There is a large area of haze across the central US that is likely remnant
smoke from the fires in northern California and the fires in southern
Montana and northern Wyoming.  The area of haze extends from the Dakotas
through Minnesota, Wisconsin, Illinois, Iowa, Nebraska and Missouri.

California:
The fires in northern California are emitting moderately dense to dense
smoke which is traveling to the northeast through Oregon and Nevada
before entering Idaho.

Wyoming:
The Lee Hardy and Gunbarrel fires in Park County and the New Fork fire
in Sublette County are producing moderately dense to dense smoke which
is moving to the northeast, extending well over 500km and entering into
South Dakota.

Montana:
The Cascade fire in Carson County is emanating moderately dense smoke
which is traveling to the northeast well over the North Dakota border.

Washington:
In southeastern Washington there are several fires which are generating
light to moderately dense smoke which is moving to the northeast.

  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
