DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0200Z AUGUST 04, 2008

Lower Mississippi Valley:
The area of smoke seen earlier in the day over the Mississippi Valley
has become difficult to discern with thunderstorm debris clouds over
the lower Mississippi Valley. A fire in western Arkansas in eastern
Sebastian county was producing a plume of moderately dense smoke that
drifted to the west and northwest.

Southeast US:
An area of aerosol was seen from eastern North and South Carolina
extending eastward off the coast into the Atlantic. It is believed
that this is a mix of haze and remnant smoke from the western fires in
California and Wyoming.

Southern Plains:
Numerous fires were seen over north central Oklahoma and south central
Kansas. There were several small plumes of thin smoke that quickly
drifted to the north and dissipated. Fires in northern Texas were also
producing smoke which was a little thicker and longer lasting. These
plumes also moved to the north from Childress, Wichita, Stephens and
Hamilton counties.

Utah:
A fire in eastern Utah county produced a plume of moderate to dense
smoke that extended to the northeast into northern Wasatch county.

Wyoming:
Three large fires continue to burn in Sublette and Park counties and
produce extensive smoke plumes. The largest blaze is in central Park
county about 50 km west of Cody. This fire had a plume of very thick
smoke that extended to the east and reaching into northwest South Dakota
by sunset. The fire in northwest Park county in Yellowstone National Park
had a narrow plume of moderately dense to dense smoke that also extended
east and merged with the plume from the other Park county fire. The third
fire in northern Sublette county had a moderately dense smoke plume fan
out and extend to the east into northeast Wyoming.

California/Oregon/Idaho:
The fires in northern California are emitting moderately dense to
dense smoke which covers most of the northwest portion of California
and extends to the northeast through southern Oregon and into central
Idaho. A fire in eastern Butte county intensified this afternoon and
quickly generated a plume of desne smoke that lifted north. A fire in
northern Wasco county Oregon along the Columbia river had a plume of
light to moderate smoke that drifted south in the county.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
