DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1700Z AUGUST 04, 2008

Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley:
The fires in Park county are producing locally moderate dense smoke
extending to the Big Horn mountains. Across the Dakotas and Minnesota
is a dense area of smoke from last night.

California/Oregon/Idaho:
The fires in northern California are emitting moderately dense to
dense smoke which covers most of the northwest portion of California
and extends to the northeast through central Oregon and into Idaho. A
fire in southern Mono county is producing a narrow locally dense plume
extending into Mineral county Nevada.

Southern Plains/Mississippi Valley:
A large area of thin haze and possible remnant smoke is hovering over
the south central portion of the US.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
