DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0150Z AUGUST 05, 2008

North Dakota, South Dakota and Minnesota:
An area of light haze mixed with smoke centered on the border between
North and South Dakota has been drifting eastward and is now over west
central Minnesota.

Oklahoma and Kansas:
Fairly numerous agricultural burns are observed in north central Oklahoma
and central Kansas. One such fire, in southwest Barber County, Kansas,
is producing a long plume of light to moderate smoke that extends
northeastward.

Wyoming and Montana:
Persistent and bright fires in western Wyoming are producing light to
moderate smoke plumes that extend eastward. Some of the smoke straddles
the Wyoming/Montana border and reaches into South Dakota.

California/Oregon/Idaho/Washington:
The fires in northern California continue to produce moderate to dense
smoke that moves northward and is now covering most of Oregon excluding
southeastern Oregon. Light smoke is now also moving into southern
Washington and central Idaho.

Northwest Territories:
A fire southwest of Great Bear Lake is producing a light smoke plume
that extends toward the south southeast.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
