DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z AUGUST 05, 2008

Northern Plains/Upper Mississippi Valley and Great Lakes/Southern Canada:
An area of light to moderately dense residual smoke lies across the
northern US and south central Canada.  Light smoke stretches across parts
of central/eastern Montana into North and South Dakota and into northern
Minnesota and Michigan.  Residual smoke across southern Michigan and
into northern Iowa is moderately dense.  Smoke is from a combination of
wildfires in northern California and Wyoming.

California/Oregon/Southern Washington/Idaho:
An area of moderately dense smoke extends from the northern California
wildfires and moves north into western/northern Oregon and Southern
Washington and eastward across southern Washington and northern Oregon
into central/northern Idaho.

Kansas/Missouri:
An area of light to moderately dense smoke likes across the central
U.S. Moderately dense smoke is located in southeast Kansas with light
smoke across central/southern Missouri.  The source of the smoke is not
confirmed but most likely from fires across the Plains and southeast US
over the last few days.

  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
