DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z AUGUST 06, 2008

Great Lakes to Lower Missouri River Valley:
Residual thin smoke can be seen extending in a 250km wide swath from
Northern Lake Huron across Lower MI, IN, IL and MO. The smoke is mixed
with haze and possibly lingering smoke over E KS.

NC Texas:
A fire located in NE Shackelford county is producing thin to moderate
smoke in the low levels that can be seen in breaks in cirrus in advance
of TD Edouard. The smoke is moving WSW rapidly due to high winds and
extend 100km to Nolan county.

Wyoming:
Very dense smoke from the Gunbarrel and Le Hardy fires in and just east
of Yellowstone NP are pouring out toward the due east nearly reaching
the SD boarder in a swath 80km wide (staying south of the MT state line).

Idaho:
A few fires in the valleys of Lewis county produced a brief puff of
moderate smoke that has fanned out with low level smoke moving S to SSW
across the valley and mid to upper level smoke racing east across far
N Idaho county to the MT line (~20km wide).
A more significant fire near Elk Summit in far E Idaho county has similar
wind patterns with lower level thin to moderate smoke moving S and SE
(all still in Idaho county) and upper level moderately dense smoke racing
eastward into MT (24km wide and extends 100km).
A fire along the Idaho/Lemhi county line is producing moderate smoke
that covers the rounded/peninsula section of Ravalli county. This smoke
exends about 40km east and is about 10km...though the fire is currently
intensifying with a small pyrocumulus cloud developing over it.

N CA/Pacific Northwest/Montana
The large fire complexes of NW California continue to produce very dense
smoke that covers all of the complex area into SW OR as far north as the
Douglas county line. The plume remains thin to moderately dense across
W OR and W WA in to Puget Sound and southern tip of Vancouver Island.
Due to the ridge the smoke is rounded with some smoke also moving
eastward covering all of central and E WA, N Idaho (including over the
fires described in the Idaho section) and finally into western MT to
about Meagher county, MT).

NW Territories:
Two fires along the eastern banks of the northern stretches of the
Mackenzie River, just SW of Great Bear Lake are producing moderately to
dense smoke plumes that are drifting ESE to SE covering Keller Lake.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
