DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 0030Z AUGUST 07, 2008

Southeast US:
A large area of mixed remnant smoke and haze can be seen over the
coastal counties of SE NC, SC and GA. The area also extends well out
to sea along the same latitudes.

Northern California/Western Oregon:
Very dense smoke continues to pour from the NW California fire complexes
from NW Tehama county and along the coastal range as far north as
southern Lane county in Oregon. This smoke does extend just offshore
but not more than 25km.

British Columbia:
Thin to moderately dense smoke from the last 1-2 days from the California
complexes has been moving due north along the leading edge of the
developing ridge over the western states. Still cloud cover obscures much
of WA, so it is unknown the extent over WA except over extreme western
Olympic peninsula. Clear skies over BC leads to a good view of the smoke
that covers all of Vancouver island western coastal range and the central
valleys as far north as 53N but the Rockies have blocked nearly all of
the smoke from moving northeastward into the prairies of Alberta.

NW Territories and N Saskatchewan:
A fire on the north central shores of Lake Athabasca is producing thin
to moderate smoke that is moving NE and is about 20km wide and extends
to NW Territory line.

A fire along the eastern shore of Great Slave Lake (east of the Simpson
Is.) is producing 3 distinct 5-10km wide streamers of thin smoke that
extend NE to Christie Bay.
A fire between the arms of Christie Bay and McLeod bay is producing
moderately dense smoke that extends NE then bends nearly due east and
moves under some passing cirrus clouds. This plume is about 10-15km
wide and extends about 20km NE then 30-50km east.
A few large fires between the Mackenzie River and Blackwater Lake (SW of
Great Bear Lake) are producing a large area of moderate to dense smoke
that is moving SE along the spine of the Franklin Range and Blackwater
Rivers out to around Bulmer Lake

Alberta:
A fire along the Alberta/BC line near Rainbow Lake is producing moderate
to dense smoke that is forming a circular burst shape moving northeastward
but no more than 30km so far.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
