DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1600Z AUGUST 07, 2008

Southeast US:
A large area of mixed remnant smoke and humid haze can be seen over the
eastern portions of NC, SC , GA and northern Florida that then extends
offshore and out into the Atlantic over 750 miles.

Northern California/Western Oregon-Washington and British Columbia:
The numerous fires in northern CA continue to send smoke north over
western OR and WA into the southern half of British Columbia and
Vancouver Island. The Rockies have blocked nearly all of the smoke
from moving east into the prairies of Alberta. This smoke also extends
offshore around 50 miles.

NW Territories/Alberta/Saskatchewan:
Moderate smoke from fires west of Great Slave Lake is combining with
smoke from fires along the Mackenzie Highway in northwestern Alberta
that is moving east across northern Alberta and Saskatchewan and
the southeastern portion of the NW Territories. Fires south of Lake
Athabasca are producing an area of light smoke that is drifting south
to east central Saskatchewan.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
