DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1500Z AUGUST 11, 2008

Northwest US:
A thin ribbon of haze can be seen extending down through Washington,
Idaho, Montana and Wyoming. This area has been traced to the eruption
of the Kasatochi volcano whose emissions include gases (SO2) and ash.

South central US:
An area of moderately dense haze can be seen throughout Missouri and
in the eastern portions of Kansas and the northern half of Arkansas.
This is most likely remnants of the fires near Lake Athabasca and the
Great Slave Lake located in Canada.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
