DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1530Z AUGUST 12, 2008

Northern California:
An area of light remnant smoke from the previous nights burning can be
seen over much of northern California and southern Oregon.

Wyoming/S. Dakota/Nebraska:
An area of light smoke is moving from western Wyoming into the western
portions of South Dakota and Nebraska.

Central US:
A band of smoke can be seen extending through the eastern portions
of South Dakota, North Dakota, Nebraska and Kansas. This smoke is
likely remnant smoke from the multiple large fires in Canada which were
generating moderately dense to dense smoke last night.

Washington/Oregon:
A thin band of unknown composition can be seen moving through central
Washington and western Oregon which is most likely emissions from
Kasatochi.

Alaska:
Thin streams of unknown composition can be seen stretching west to east
through central Alaska. This is thought to be ash and SO2 emissions
from the Kasatochi eruption.

Canada:
There are several areas of haze throughout Canada which maybe be smoke
from the fires near the Great Slave Lake and Lake Athabasca or emission
of ash and SO2 from the Kasatochi eruption. The areas effected by the
haze include a thin ribbon running along the Alberta/British Columbia
border and into the Northwest Territories above the Great Slave Lake.
A large area of dense haze over much of Ontario, northern Manitoba and
the eastern area of the Northwest Territories.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
