DESCRIPTIVE TEXT NARRATIVE FOR SMOKE/DUST OBSERVED IN SATELLITE IMAGERY
THROUGH 1645Z AUGUST 14, 2008

California/Western US:
Some residual light smoke over the northern third of California,
especially in the northwest corner of the state, and over western
Oregon, is currently drifting to the north. A narrow plume of SO2 from
the Kasatochi volcanic eruption last week is still meandering across
western Washington State, southern Oregon, northern Nevada, Utah, and
southern Colorado.

Canada/Great Lakes Region:
Residual light to pockets of moderately dense smoke is present over
areas of northern Manitoba, Hudson Bay, Ontario, and extreme northern
sections of the Great Lakes area – Michigan, Minnesota, and northern
Wisconsin. The smoke is generally drifting off to the south and east.

Unless otherwise indicated:
  • Areas of smoke are analyzed using GOES-EAST and GOES-WEST Visible satellite imagery.
  • Only a general description of areas of smoke or significant smoke plumes will be analyzed.
  • A quantitative assessment of the density/amount of particulate or the vertical distribution is not included.
  • Widespread cloudiness may prevent the detection of smoke even from significant fires.
